My “Podcast Stack”: 6 Essential Tools I Use for Recording and Sharing My Podcasts
Though I don’t consider myself a professional podcaster, just somebody who likes to share quality content, one of the questions I’m frequently asked is, “What do you use to record your podcasts?”
Here, I’ll share my personal toolkit that helps me produce quality podcasts, from recording to hosting, with a particular focus on efficiency.
1️⃣ Riverside.fm for Remote Recording and Transcripts
Riverside is an incredibly powerful platform that not only allows me to record high-quality audio podcasts remotely but also offers excellent transcription services. The ability to record each participant on their own track greatly enhances the post-production process, ensuring crystal-clear sound quality.
2️⃣ Custom Script for Summaries and Chapter Extraction
After recording, the next step in my workflow involves a custom script I’ve developed. This script uses AI to generate a first draft summary of the episode and extract chapter markers. It makes it easier to highlight key points and organize the episode structure effectively.
3️⃣ Audacity Team for Audio Editing
When it comes to audio editing, Audacity is my go-to software. It’s a free, open-source tool that’s incredibly versatile for noise correction, cutting, pasting, and other essential editing tasks. Whether I need to remove background noise or rearrange segments of a recording, Audacity offers flexibility and easiness to use.
4️⃣ Buzzsprout for Podcast Hosting
Choosing the right hosting platform is crucial, and Buzzsprout is my top recommendation. It’s user-friendly, provides excellent analytics, and offers seamless distribution to major platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. Buzzsprout’s reliability and support have made it an indispensable part of my podcasting workflow.
5️⃣ A Good Microphone
Last but not least, investing in a high-quality microphone is essential for producing professional-grade audio. I recommend the Shure MV7 (150 – 200 USD range); great value for its price, with crisp, clear sound. While the SM7dB is a fantastic mic, at a 500 USD price mark it might be overkill for most people. 6️⃣ Process Automation and Coordination
Efficiency is crucial behind the scenes. I rely on a suite of tools, including Calendly for scheduling, to coordinate with guests and manage my workflow. These tools automate the administrative side of podcasting, allowing me to focus more on content creation.
